5 Orthodontic Myths Busted

It’s no secret what a dentist does. But what about orthodontics?

Simply put, orthodontics is studying and treating improper bites and crooked teeth.

At Cosmo Dental Centre, we want our patients to enjoy the process of getting a beautiful smile as much as possible through our orthodontic treatments. Unfortunately, several myths and half-truths may discourage people from seeking orthodontic treatment. Here are some of them explained.

5-Orthodontic-Myths-Busted-opt1. Braces Always Hurt
In the old days, it’s true that wearing braces was much more challenging than it is today. Fortunately, new improvements made in techniques and materials have led to great reduction in discomfort. Treatments are now more effective than ever and cause little to no discomfort.

2. Braces Should be Tight
Another common misconception about braces is that in order for them to work faster, they should be tighter. The tighter your braces are, the sooner you’ll take them off, or so many believe. However, this simply isn’t true, as over tightening your braces only harms your teeth and bones and does little to align them any faster.

Orthodontic-Myths-Busted-opt3. You Need to Have your Braces Wires Changed Regularly
True, older orthodontic treatments required constant changing of wires. But with the new developments in orthodontic treatments and materials, wires may have to be changed far less often than ever.

4. Braces Are your Only Option
Although braces are still the most popular option as far as teeth alignment goes, effective alternatives are now available. Tooth aligners such as Invisalign have emerged as a popular treatment. They provide similar alignment benefits of braces while being less obtrusive (e.g. invisible).

5. Braces are Instant Solutions
The road to alignment begins the day the braces are put on, but you won’t notice any changes right away. In fact, it takes a while to see improvements. Patience and regular visits to the dentist are key to achieving best results.
