Everyone benefits from professional dental health care, ranging from routine cleaning to dental implants. Regardless of the dental procedure you need, aftercare is necessary. If you do these five things after seeing a great dentist in London, Ontario, you’ll be able to resume normal activity sooner.
Good Oral Hygiene
Practicing good, regular oral hygiene promotes faster healing and prevents infection. The night before a procedure, thoroughly brush, floss, and rinse. Do the same the morning of your dental appointment. Your dentist may prescribe an oral rinse to be used before your appointment and special toothpaste for use afterwards.
For the next few days, brush gently and use a warm salt water rinse (1/2 teaspoon of salt dissolved in 1 cup of warm water) to reduce swelling and ease soreness.
Consume soft foods for the first few days after more invasive dental work. Stay away from very hot and very cold liquids, too. Routine cleaning and X-rays rarely require changing your diet, but more involved dental procedures may require a few days of food/beverage restrictions.
After dental surgery or extraction, vigorous exercise or physical labour may cause the gum area to throb or bleed. Limit your activity to promote faster recovery. You might feel fatigued; get plenty of rest and drink a frozen fruit and yogurt smoothie filled with vitamins and energy-boosting protein, fibre and Omega-3s (found in milled flaxseed).
The dentist may prescribe pain medication and/or antibiotics following a dental procedure. Take all medications as directed. If you have oral pain but no prescription, over-the-counter acetaminophen can be taken every six hours to manage discomfort.
Some swelling is normal with certain dental procedures and an ice pack will help reduce swelling and alleviate pain. Keep an ice pack on treated area while relaxing and reading or watching TV.
